Abstract | This paper presents evidence to support the claim that the teaching of writing at the university level requires a special approach unique to the field of English as a second language. The thinking process concept of writing instruction is advocated with two additions focusing on classroom activities for treating the language difficulties of foreign students in universities. First, a broad error analysis is suggested as an initial step in isolating problem areas. Secondly, sentence combining exercises are shown to be effective in treating many of these errors. Examples are given of sentence combining exercises used at Texas A&M University with reference to two types of syntactic and two types of rhetorical errors. (Author) |
